1 WHY CHOOSE CORK
![]()
1.1 Fertility and biodiversity
The Mediterranean forests host a high number of animals and plants, known as non-wood forest products, which have had an important economic role in the Mediterranean since ancient times. Many traditional management systems of these resources have not had a negative impact on the stability of these delicate ecosystems, but have in fact contributed to preserving the high biodiversity of these areas.
The Mediterranean cork forests are the ideal habitat for many very rare species: iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) and imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) in Spain and Portugal, wild cat (Felis sylvestris) and barbary deer (Cervus elaphus barbarus) in Tunisia, the Corsican red deer (Cervus elaphus corsicanus) in Sardinia. All the European cranes spend their winter in the Spanish and Portuguese cork forests and even the extremely rare Bonelli’s eagle (Hieraetus fasciatus) uses this environment for its reproduction.
