2 THE CORK INDUSTRY

2.2 The cork stripping
For centuries the cork stripping has been an activity linked to the experience and skills of operators that use a stripping technique passed on from father to son.
They use small axes, cut the bark of the tree applying two circular cuts and two vertical cuts, then complete the job manually to avoid “pulling” the bark and damaging the phellogen of the plant, a protective layer under which new cells regrow, thus generating the new cork bark.
Today mechanical equipment with electronic sensors can be used to cut the bark, thus avoiding the contact with the phellogen.
In this way the tree is not hurt and the bark can be cut before stripping, which is then carried out at a later stage, when the best climatic conditions prevail.
