2.5 “Wild” cork and “reproduction” cork
When the tree reaches 20/25 years of age and its trunk reaches a sufficient diameter, it undergoes the first stripping.

The first cork obtained by the tree is called “male”, “wild” or “virgin” cork; it is a porous material, mostly used for construction and industrial purposes. After another 10 years, the “female” or “reproduction” cork is stripped. It is a more compact, light, elastic and waterproof material, which can be used for the production of cork stoppers.

The other harvests will generally occur once every 10 years during the whole life of the plant, that often lasts many centuries. The cork pieces which are taken from the plant are called “cork sheets”.
